HESCO USA launches the Delta unit

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico early in 2010 was the worst on record in the United States. This, combined with storm damage, means that many of the USA’s renowned wetlands are more threatened now than at any other time.

HESCO USA’s well-established products, Concertainer and Floodline, were used extensively during the first months of the oil spill to defend US coastlines against the worst effects of the spill, and were key in protecting shorelines and inland waterways against damage.

With storm damage threatening our wetlands every year, HESCO USA has developed the Delta unit. This completely new Concertainer product, which uses all the advantages of the system, provides
a defensive wall tailored to aid in the recovery of our wetlands from the effects of storm surge.

The lined rear cells are filled with locally available material, such as sand or soil, to anchor the units and allow the planting of natural plants and grasses. The triangular front cell shape also helps to dissipate the energy from waves and storm surge, extending the initial life of the units until the planting in the filled sections can take root – once it does, the units become completely concealed.

The unlined front sections perform a further, crucial role: they can be filled with empty oyster shells, which attract and promote the growth of living oysters. The spats (oysters in the larval stage) attach to the empty shells in the unit to create extensive oyster reefs, providing natural, long-term defense against wave erosion.

The Concertainer system now provides a comprehensive range of products for use in the protection and restoration of our nation’s wetlands.

Fast Facts About HESCO:
A typical wall of HESCO Concertainer units - equivalent to approximately 1500 sandbags - can be erected and installed by two people, using a standard front loader, in just 20 minutes. A similar sandbag wall would take ten workers roughly seven hours to erect.

The innovative HESCO Concertainer system consists of linked welded mesh cells lined with geotextile. The units are flat-packed, transported to flood zones on pallets, and erected on-site easily in a matter of minutes. The units are then machine-filled with aggregate (dirt, sand) to form a robust defense wall.

HESCO Concertainers were installed to protect a critical I-wall located along the Industrial Canal in New Orleans during Hurricane Gustav. This location was one of the most vulnerable sections of the entire New Orleans flood protection system.

HESCO Concertainer units have been widely and successfully used to protect our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Walls built from the units have also been used to protect hospitals, guard posts and embassies.
